About Our Organization
The Bethel - St. Clair Meals on Wheels was organized in 1972 as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the late Dorothy Watson Our kitchen followed the guidelines set forth by the Lutheran Services Society until 2008. In October, 2008, Bethel - St. Clair Meals on Wheels incorporated as an independent, non-profit organization.
Gaining clients almost weekly, our organization has grown from 30 clients in 1972 to 70 in 2008. The client list grew close to 100 during the winter months of 2015. As of January 1, 2021, our count is 75 , expecting the number to climb during the winter months.
Our mission is to provide an alternative to institutionalization, through good nutrition, enabling the elderly and/or disabled to remain in their homes with independence and dignity. Geriatric experts agree that proper nutrition is one of the fundamental requirements in maintaining health and alertness in the lives of the elderly and disabled.
Another objective of the Meals on Wheels is to address the problem of isolation through human contact by the daily, physical presence of volunteers in the homes of those being served. The drivers are able to convey concerns of clients who may need additional help. Meals on Wheels also provides supportive referral services through networking with the Department of Aging and local Social Service Agencies.
